OnTrack, the Asheville Branch NAACP, and Telco Community Credit Union have partnered to offer the NAACP Credit Awareness Project. The project provides free credit reports to the community twice monthly at the NAACP Empowerment Resource Center located at 91 Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville.
The project annually helps over 192 community members obtain their credit reports and has been successful in helping minorities, who represent over 60% of those served.
“For many individuals, this marks the first step towards financial wellness. Beyond the immediate assistance provided, the Credit Awareness Project does an excellent job of reaching minorities - race, ethnicity and gender-directly empowering individuals in underserved communities with valuable information to improve their personal finances,” commented Laurie Knowles, OnTrack Director of Education.
The sponsorship from Telco underwrites the cost of the service, thus making it free and available to all community members on a first-come first-serve basis.
“Telco is proud to support a project that clearly provides valuable and often times inaccessible information to our community members. At Telco, we realize that once people are able to receive accurate information about their credit history paired with tools to understand their financial situation, they can begin transitioning from financial crisis to financial stability, self-sufficiency, and asset building,” stated Sabra Rock, Telco Director of Business and Community Development.
OnTrack and the Asheville NAACP have partnered since 2000 to offer the Credit Awareness Project. “This project is vital to lower-wealth people in our community. Access to the wealth in Western North Carolina begins with credit,” commented Elder John Hayes, President of the Asheville Branch NAACP.
People interested in utilizing the service need to bring photo identification (such as a driver's license) and another form of identification. Check our education schedule to view the next free Credit Awareness Day.
